Since our start in February 2011 we have grown steadily and have a lively and friendly group but would like to recruit new members.Members are not required to have a scientific background, merely an interest in how science is shaping our lives. Our most stimulating discussions are often initiated by those with no scientific background.
The Science Discussion Group meets to discuss topics of current scientific interest: sometimes to find out more about an unfamiliar subject or to decide whether the subject is being reported fairly in the media (see through the hype). This usually results in a wider discussion of the implications of the subject for society at large, whether now or in the future.
Recent subjects have included; Examples of bad science reporting causing public panics;  Energy sources; Miracle foods (green tea etc.): Effects of processing food; The Pharmaceutical Industry: Alternative therapies,  Brain ageing and Fracking (water not brains!). Each year the December meeting is a lighthearted one in which each member is asked to give a presention of no more  5 mins on a scientific subject related to Christmas. This can be relatively serious or fictional. At previous such meetings subjects have included "Structure of Snowflakes" (very interesting) and "Quantum theory explanation of the simultaneous appearances of Father Christmas" (daft)
